This is an anthology of short fiction stories collated during a nature storytelling session for children on Havelock Island.
Stories have a wonderful way of helping us see the world from a different perspective. They can change the way we think about the place we call home and the many other living beings we share it with. This collection brings together some of the most memorable stories from a nature storytelling session. The young writers were given a simple question to imagine: “What if you woke up tomorrow and had turned into a creature? What would the world look like to you?”
We hope these stories inspire a greater love for nature and a deeper appreciation of the incredible natural heritage of these islands. A special thank you to the parents of these young writers for giving us permission to publish and share these stories. We truly appreciate your trust and support.
SECTION - I: THE SECRET LIFE OF ANTS
(Laal Kalo) or Red and Black by Ishaan Ghosh
Illustrations and comics by Priya M
After three days of nonstop rain, the sun finally came out on the fourth morning. The light reflected off the tiny drops of water on the blades of grass, making everything seem brighter. Nearby was a large mango tree with its branches spread out. On one of those branches, a few black ants walked around before they gathered to talk about what to do next.
Of course, humans can’t understand the language of ants. So let us imagine their conversation in our own words.
First Ant: The rain only stopped today. The ground is still wet. I don’t think it’s worth going down yet.
Second Ant: Maybe, but we’re running low on food. If we don’t start searching soon, we’ll all go hungry.
First Ant: Even if we go, I doubt we’ll find much. We might just end up getting crushed by some large animal.
Third Ant: Then why don’t we search inside a human house instead?
First and Second Ants: That might actually work.
Just then, the fourth ant noticed something below.
Fourth Ant: Everyone, get ready! There are red ants coming this way. It looks like they’re heading straight for us.

The others panicked. They hurried back to the nest, warned the rest of the colony, and got ready for a fight. But when the red ants finally arrived, the black ants realised they had misunderstood the situation. The visitors hadn’t come to fight. They had come to ask for help.

The black ants were careful at first, but the red ants looked so tired that they decided to let them inside. After giving them food and letting them rest, they asked what had happened.
The red ants explained, “This morning we entered a human house looking for food. A human caught many of our friends in a glass jar and carried them away. We hid until it seemed safe, then tried to rescue them. But when the human came back, we had to hide again. From where we were hiding, we saw the human taking the ants out one by one and pulling their body parts apart. We didn’t understand what was happening, but it scared us. That’s why we came here.”

The room fell silent. After a while, the black ants started talking about what to do.
First Ant: It could be a trick to lure us in.
Second Ant: I was thinking the same thing.
Third Ant: I don’t think so. If the red ants wanted to attack us, they wouldn’t have come asking for help.
The others agreed. They knew they had little chance against humans, but they also knew they couldn’t ignore what they had heard.
Fourth Ant: We already search human houses for food. At least now we’ll know what to watch out for.
Everyone: That’s true.
In the end, they decided to go.
When they reached the human house, they split into two groups. One group searched for food while the other looked for the trapped ants. They entered a dark room. Shelves lined both walls, filled with books. Glass jars containing preserved animals stood nearby, and a large table was in one corner of the room.

The red ants stopped.
Red Ant: This is where we last saw them.
The ants climbed onto the table. There, just like the red ants had said, was a large glass jar with the trapped red ants inside.

They called out through the tiny air holes.
Ants Outside: Can you hear us? We’ve come to get you out.
Ants Inside: Please… save us!
Ants Outside: Don’t worry. We’re here.
After a moment of silence, they came up with a plan. There was no way to open the jar, so they decided to push it off the table.
The ants inside pushed from one side while those outside pushed from the other. It took all their strength, but little by little the jar rolled closer to the edge.
Then it fell.
The glass hit the floor and shattered.

The sound brought me running into my observation room. The jar that had held the red ants lay in pieces across the floor.
But the ants were gone.

A Lesson from the Ant Colony by Rajeshwari Biswas

I am an ant. Today, it looked like it was about to rain because the sky was filled with dark clouds. I went out on a stroll with my ant friends when, suddenly, we smelled sugar. All of us started looking for it. We looked down and saw something that looked like sugar lying there. When we went to get it, it started raining heavily. All of us left the sugar and started running to avoid getting wet. But an old ant, instead of running away, kept trying to carry the sugar, even though it wasn’t easy for him. Everyone watched him and decided to help. We broke the sugar into smaller pieces and brought it safely back to the nest.
After we reached the nest, we asked him, “Why weren’t you running away?”
The old ant replied, “I didn’t run away because, come heavy rain or storm, someone must find food for the colony.”
SECTION - II: THE SPIDER AND THE ANT
The Life of A Cosmo by Aditya Das
Comic by Sarah A.
It was a hot day, and all the insects were storing food for the monsoon and winter. When I woke up in the morning, I was scared when I saw my face in a water drop. I saw that I was a Cosmophasis spider. I was so hungry. I was trying to find some food when I saw a big nest of weaver ants. I climbed the plant very easily. I went close and entered the colony by using a special smell. The smell confused the ants. I was waiting for an ant to pounce on because I was so hungry. An ant finally came. I was ready to pounce on him, but suddenly a little voice called, “Daddy, where are you? I am hungry.” I felt pity for the ant, and I left him alone. For my good deed, I was changed back into a human. I am now 38 years old and the successful writer of the book Life of A Cosmo.

SECTION - III: UNDER THE SEA
The Whale’s Choice by Emon Dhali
Comics by Emon D.
This story is about a whale whom everyone believed to be evil, but in reality, he was not bad. He was just alone.
ACT 1 - REGRET

One day, as he was swimming, he saw a trawler trapping his best whale friend. He tried to help, but he couldn’t because he was scared of them. He watched as they trapped his friend in a net and took him away.

“I couldn’t rescue my friend,” he thought to himself remorsefully.
Time passed rather slowly after his friend died. He was so sad. No one spoke to him. He found himself alone.

A passing school of fish asked him, “Bro, what’s going on?”
“Nothing happened,” he said sadly.

The school of fish pitied him and asked him to join them. Now he was not alone. He had other fish friends. He explored the world with his new friends, but thoughts of his best friend’s death never left his mind.

ACT 2 - REVENGE

One rainy night, as he was exploring the world, he saw the same trawler.
“Even in this heavy rain, these humans won’t let us have peace,” he grumbled.

He had memorised the trawler that had caught his friend when, suddenly, he saw that it was starting to sink in the ocean. At first, he thought, “Let them sink. They deserve it.” But then he reconsidered because he had humanity. He went under the trawler and carried it on his back.

His other fish friends were confused. “What is he doing?” they whispered among themselves. He carried the trawler back to the harbour. He had saved it.

The next day, though, they were back again to catch and kill more fish.

But this time, the whale was very angry. The humans had not learned. This time, he ensured that they sank.
Whether it is a human or an animal, everyone can feel anger.

Me and My Shark Friends (Main aur mere shark doston) by Adarsh Biswas
Comics by Sarah A.
My name is Ajay. One night, as I fell asleep, I wished that I were a shark and imagined all the things I would get to do. Then I fell asleep.
The next morning, when I woke up, I had turned into a shark. I thanked God for granting me my wish. I started feeling suffocated because I realised I was on land and needed to find water. I ended up finding a swimming pool, but I realised that so much water was not enough for me.
My brother discovered me and panicked. As he panicked, he shrieked, which alerted everyone, and they called the Fisheries Department. The Fisheries Department released me into the ocean. The moment I was released, I started swimming like a free bird in the open sky. I saw many corals and other sharks. When I saw them, I realised that two of them were my friends, Sameer and Asheesh. They also recognised me as their friend Ajay.

Then we started exploring the ocean together. I got really hungry, and then someone got me a grouper to eat. I ate my grouper and took a nap. When I woke up from my nap at night, I saw that the ocean had come alive with tons of jellyfish.
Then, in the morning, I saw that I had turned back into a human. I struggled and swam towards the shore, avoiding the very shark friends whom I had been exploring with the previous day. Then I wore my clothes and came to tuition. I saw that the tuition was closed, so I did a happy dance.
At that moment, I woke up abruptly and realised that it had all been a dream. Then my mother said, "Go to tuition." When I went there, I saw that Didi was sitting there, and on the board it said, Nature Storytelling Session. I wrote this exact story and won first prize.
